One piece of positive news speaking to leaders of 2 large hospitals in India where most healthcare workers were fully vaccinated: No serious COVID cases among any of the vaccinated healthcare workers during this current crisis. The vaccines are working.
The vaccines available in India are COVISHIELD (Astra Zeneca /SII) and COVAXIN.
There will be anecdotal reports of people who have had severe COVID after full vaccination (2 weeks after 2 doses). But hospital data give a sense of denominator.
Although one could attribute some of the protection to PPE, healthcare workers do go home everyday and face the same exposures as the rest of the population outside of the work setting.

@VincentRK I did hear similar data from my close family member who’s working in one of the hospitals in Tamil Nadu. People who tested positive for COVID after getting vaccinated (2 doses, after 2 weeks) had only mild symptoms. Among them no one required ICU care.
I’ve heard this on the #AskTheDoctor series from 7 different hospital chains. No ICU and no death among their fully vaccinated healthcare workers. The IMA president from Lucknow was the only one who had seen cases of serious Covid post vaccination. #VaccinesWork
I'm a doctor for whom every death matters. But we will cause more harm making people skeptical of vaccines by sowing doubt on vaccine efficacy based on lab studies or anecdotes/reports that do not give good sense of the denominator.

Public Health England has presented the first real-world data on vaccine efficacy against B.1.617.2, the variant first found in India.
Efficacy against symptomatic B.1.617.2 was 81% after two doses, much higher than many have feared.
