Since the Xcode 14 release, we've seen more and more apps significantly increase in size

Apps like increased by as much as 75% after releasing with Xcode 14 🤯

We dive deeper into the unexpected increases in this blog post

Xcode 14 deprecated bitcode by default, which we've detailed a few times.

Basically, bitcode optimizes production builds, partly by stripping away unneeded metadata (binary symbols).

Let's take a look at how this affected the BeReal iOS app

On 7/15, BeReal v0.22.5 measured at 55 MB install size

On 10/31, v0.25.2 was 96.7 MB (+75%) 📈

Almost all the increase was because of increased binary size due to releasing with Xcode 14

In v0.22.5 (before Xcode 14), there were 186.1 KB of binary symbols.

Overall, frameworks took up 38.7 MB

In v0.25.2 (after Xcode 14), there was 39.4 MB of binary symbols. 186.1 KB -> 39.4 MB 🧠

Frameworks took up 79.6 MB. Notice the addition of the dark blue "String Table(s)"

These string tables are the unnecessary metadata that bitcode used to strip. Now, its in production

Luckily, this is an easy problem to fix 🛠️

We detail different ways to strip binary symbols without bitcode here:

We also highlight a number of other apps in the blog, like how could shave off ~245 MB from their app

plz let your iOS friends know so I don't have to delete any more pictures 😅
