To double your productivity without working harder, batch similar tasks to reduce setup time, spend 5 minutes planning big tasks, block 1-2 hours for deep focus, prioritize health habits, and talk with challenging, smart people. Focus on one method at a time for best results.
How to double your productivity – without working any harder:
Batch Your Tasks
Group similar tasks and do them at the same time.
You can batch by:
- Location
- Tools used
- Energy level
Batching reduces context-switching (which disrupts your focus).
It also eliminates a lot of setup/cleanup work.
Do a 5-Minute Prep
Before you start a large task, take 5 minutes to:
- Break it down into clear steps
- Identify the next action you need to take
- Ensure the task is actually contributing to your larger goal
A small amount of planning/prep will prevent a lot of wasted time.
Block Out Dedicated Time for Large Tasks
If you work on big tasks in small bursts, you incur context-switching penalties:
- Lack of deep focus
- Difficulty taking attention off the last thing you did
Instead, block out 1-2 hours for big task. You'll get it done much faster.
Even if prioritizing these habits reduces your working hours, you'll still get a net benefit.
When you ignore them, you can't work at your full potential.
Talk Regularly with People Who Will Challenge You
Many of my major jumps in productivity have come after talking with friends who pointed out better ways I could be doing things.
The more you can surround yourself with smart people who will challenge you, the better.
That's it for this one.
There are other methods that can similarly improve your productivity, but these ones are accessible to most people and are easy to focus on.
Pick one and focus on it.
