I don’t live in the worst area hit by the hurricane, but my area did lose power & take damage. Walking around in the aftermath, I saw that the grocery store had thrown out a dumpster full of refrigerated food. Crowded around it: people fighting, screaming in various languages.

Beat-up Nissans and minivans parked in a haphazard circle. Fake-designer clothes, torn by the efforts of their fat wearers to climb into the dumpster. Almost no one was speaking English, but they were all very frantic. Must have been at least 40 people there. Very Mad Max.

Just around the corner, there were crews of linemen working. Nearby, a small crowd on a residential street had gathered to cut & clear a fallen tree. The women brought out coolers with water and beer. Two very different images of society
