(1/x) In advance of tonight's #VPDebate, I thought I'd comment on a @crampell piece falsely claiming that @JDVance wants to "destroy the health-care system." I know more about JD's views on health care than pretty much anyone outside of his team, due to firsthand interactions.

@crampell @JDVance (2/x) The @crampell piece is here: . It's full of misrepresentations of @JDVance's views. JD was against the GOP's repeal-and-replace efforts, because JD believes in universal coverage, as do I (though I supported AHCA/BCRA).

@crampell @JDVance (3/x) @crampell makes an actuarially illiterate argument that it is *necessary* to overcharge young and healthy people for health insurance in order to have a functioning insurance system. This is the opposite of the truth. Overcharging the healthy blows up insurance markets.

@crampell @JDVance (4/x) Because, unless you force those young and healthy people back into the market through mandates, they understand that the young & healthy uninsured are being unfairly punished.

@crampell @JDVance (5/x) The best way to subsidize the costs of health care for the sick and the vulnerable is for all Americans to share that burden equally, rather than to impose it solely on the tiny fraction of Americans who are uninsured & happen to be young and healthy.

@crampell @JDVance (6/x) This is the basic actuarial insight that @JDVance was trying to express that @crampell claims will "unravel the U.S. health-care system." In fact, directly subsidizing those costs through reinsurance, as the GOP replacement contemplated, would strengthen U.S. health care.

@crampell @JDVance (7/x) None of this fairly important context appears in @crampell's column, which goes on to claim—absurdly—that "'Choice' is not something Republicans usually celebrate in health-care decisions." And I say this as someone who is pretty far from being a Trump-Vance shill.

@crampell @JDVance (8/x) It's worth re-reading some of the things @crampell wrote about Obamacare in 2012, in the context of her claims about @JDVance's views:

@crampell @JDVance (9/x) I totally respect that there are differing views in the health policy community about how to best achieve universal coverage using private health insurance. I and @FREOPP have expressed our views here:

@crampell @JDVance @FREOPP (10/x) The core idea in @FREOPP's work is that if you want to help the sick and the vulnerable afford health insurance, the solution is to subsidize that cost for them, rather than forcing other uninsured people to pay higher prices.

@crampell @JDVance @FREOPP (11/x) People who cheerleaded the doubling-to-quadrupling of nongroup health insurance premiums under Obamacare should have more humility about how they describe others' views on alternative approaches to health reform.
