someone makes a joke about satoru being high maintenance to suguru who laughs it off, but satoru kinda internalising it bc he doesn’t want make suguru take care of him constantly and get tired of it, and he hasn’t worried about it before but now it’s a possibility
so he makes an effort to not let suguru just take care of everything, or spoil him so much, and it kinda sucks bc satoru loves being spoiled, but if this is the price of keeping suguru then it’s one he’s more than willing to pay
so he stops asking suguru to pick him up sweets on the way from work, doesn’t demand suguru’s dessert as well, stops blowing his phone up on the rare occasions he’s out without satoru, ignores suguru’s insistence that he’s got the dishes and satoru should just go relax
and there’s got to be some truth to the high maintenance comment, bc the less effort satoru tries and make himself, the sweeter suguru gets, insistent on satoru staying in his arms when he /knows/ there’s chores he could prob do, flowers randomly left on his desk
and suguru’s even sweeter in bed, insisting satoru just lie back and feel good, that he doesn’t have to do anything, just let suguru take care of him, and satoru would protest but he’s too busy arching into suguru’s touch, rationality out the window in the face of pleasure
it goes on for several weeks, satoru ran a bit rugged between stopping himself from constantly bothering suguru and also insisting that suguru really doesn’t have to bother, it’s okay, satoru can do it on his own
but what was supposed to take pressure off of suguru seems to do the exact opposite - satoru starts noticing how dejected suguru looks whenever satoru tells him he doesn’t have to get him another dessert, not sleeping as well when satoru tries to stay on his side of the bed
he can’t stress enough how much easier this would be if suguru didn’t look like a dejected puppy every time satoru doesn’t let him make an extra effort just for him
it comes to a head when they’re out in a cafe satoru wanted to go to but didn’t ask, until suguru insisted that he wants to check it out and their strawberry cake is supposed to be delicious don’t you want to test it yourself?
satoru devoured his first slice bc the cake is in fact delicious, and when he couldn’t stop his eyes from straying back to the display, suguru shakes his head and stands up
“i get it, i get it,” he chuckles. “i’ll grab you another one.”
“no!” satoru says too sharply
he winces at this own tone, offering suguru an apologetic smile. “i got it, don’t worry. i can pay for my own cake.”
he expects suguru to let it go and sit back down, but instead all he gets is a frown and suguru making no move for his seat. “i got it,” he insists
“you don’t have to,” satoru argues half-heatedly
“i want to.” suguru’s frown deepens, the furrow in his brow more confusion than anything.
“okay,” satoru concedes weakly.
“unless,” suguru trails off. “do you not want me to?” his voice is uncertain in a way satoru has never heard. suguru’s the picture of unfaltering confidence, and satoru hates himself a little in the moment for causing a crack
he doesn’t know what to say to make it better
“no, that’s not,” he trails off as well, unsure how to explain himself. “i mean. it’s just- you don’t have to.” he waves his hand as an explanation that’a currently escaping him. “you’re always doing stuff for me.” he forces a chuckle. “you don’t have to always take care of me”
suguru sits back down, and satoru tries to tamp down the flicker of disappointment he feels. before he can get up and get himself the slice instead, suguru reaches out across the table to grab his hands in his own.
“sweetheart.” and he sounds so /sad/. “why won’t you let me take care of you?”
satoru meets suguru’s eyes and feels a a stab of guilt at the miserable frown on his face. he did that, this was his fault.
“i don’t want you to get tired of me,” he mumbles.
“satoru,” suguru starts, and satoru jumps in before he can continue.
“i know i can be a bit much. i’m just trying not to leave everything to you.”
“/baby/. satoru.” satoru winces at the hurt tone.
“you’re never too much for me, i /want/ to do those things for you. satoru, i love you, all i want to do is make you happy and feel loved. please.” there’s an edge of desperation in his voice satoru barely detects. “let me?”
satoru swallows roughly, searching those familiar eyes for any hint of a lie. all he finds is sincerity, suguru looking at him pleadingly.
“you promise you don’t mind?” satoru asks, dropping his gaze to their locked hands.
“i promise.”
suguru pauses before he draws back slightly. he stands up and rounds the table, bending down to press a firm kiss to the top of satoru’s head.
“i’m gonna get you your cake now.”
“could you…” satoru trails off.
“yeah, yeah, another frap as well.”
satoru finds himself smiling as he watches suguru step up to the counter. and when he comes back with satoru’s bounty, dropping it in front of him with another kiss to his head, he devours it unapologetically.
