This thread explains how Congress leaders, especially VK Menon, politicized the military in 1959, ignoring warnings and weakening our defenses. Nehru stuck with Menon despite failures, leading to poor preparedness during the 1962 China war. Today, Congress's politics on military programs echo these past mistakes, risking national security.
🧵🚨
The nation suffered each time the Congress tried to politicise the Military for their agenda.
In 1959, all three military chiefs wanted to resign, while the Chinese were at our doorstep because Defence Minister VK Menon was promoting junior officers over seniors.
The news of the resignation made global headlines in 1959.
While the Chinese were invading our lands, Nehru's closest aide, VK Menon, was accused of injecting politics into the military. VK Menon was often accused of having a soft corner for the Chinese, as reported here.
However, Nehru did not listen to his military chiefs and instead stuck with Menon in 1959. Three years from here, the worst awaited our soldiers & nation.
'Civil Authority Must Remain Supreme', Nehru said. Not like army was planning a coup, yet Menon's incompetence was ignored.
In 1962, Nehru finally gave up on Menon, but not before he made several attempts to save him, first as the minister for defence production, and that too after he failed to plan for the China war or even anticipate their intent. Why was Nehru so fond of a failed defence minister?
This is what the global newspapers thought about Menon.
'Good Riddance'.
Menon left India unprepared, our soldiers fighting with World War 1 equipment. Yet, Nehru gave him the longest rope possible, politics and personal liking over national security.
Therefore, today, when the Congress politicises the Agnipath programme to further its electoral interests, we must remember its cost from 1962. Because of the same mindset, our soldiers were left with inadequate equipment and clothing in the peaks of the Himalayas.
