Ladies, for reference sake, I’m going to give you clear distinctions between infections you may experience during your lifetime. Open thread 👇🏼

So, I know we tag everything as toilet infection, but it’s really not. Toilet infection is a myth. We shouldn’t be using dirty toilets in the first place, however microbes that cause infections are not gotten from the toilet. You can get a butt rash though.

Infections are broadly divided into 2; - Vaginal infections - Sexually transmitted infections. You can develop vaginal infections without having sexual intercourse. They’re usually a result of a shift in vaginal micro flora. Examples are candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis.

CANDIDIASIS Candidiasis is a fungal infection due to an overgrowth of yeast in the vagina. Symptoms include: - Itch (severe or moderate) - Swelling of the vulva - Thick cheese-like discharge - Burning during urination.

BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS BV is the infection with the fishy smell. It is due to an imbalance of vaginal bacteria and also unprotected sex with multiple sexual partners. Symptoms include: - Off white or grey discharge - Fishy smell after sex - Burning during urination.

The main difference between candidiasis and bacterial vaginosis is the smell. Causes of both; - Douching - Abuse of antibiotics - Bad hygiene - Stress - Low immunity - Multiple sexual partners.

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES Under sexually transmitted diseases, we have; - Gonorrhea - Chlamydia - Syphilis - Trichomoniasis - Genital herpes. With sexually transmitted diseases, you have to go for a laboratory diagnosis. These infections are usually asymptomatic.

However, when they do present; GONORRHEA - Urinary urgency - Pain or burning during urination - Pain during sexual intercourse - Lower abdominal pain - White or yellow vaginal discharge - Bleeding between periods. Gonorrhea usually present with chlamydia, so both infections..

..are treated at the same time. SYPHILIS Syphilis is the toughest infection to pin down. This is because it is asymptomatic and symptoms resolve on their own. There’re 4 stages of infection: - Stage 1 presents with a painless sore on the genitals that resolves with time.

- Stage 2 present with; • Non itchy rash • Muscle aches • Fever, fatigue, sore throat • White lesions. These symptoms also resolve if not identified and treated. - Stage 3 is latent. The body harbors the bacteria for a long time. - Stage 4 or tertiary syphilis is..

..the stage where organs and blood vessels get damaged. Syphilis is treatable in all stages, however organ damage cannot be reversed. It can also lead to death if not treated.

TRICHOMONIASIS Trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite. Symptoms are very similar to vaginal infections, however trich is predominantly sexually transmitted. They include; - Large amount of foul smelling discharge - Pain during urination or sex - Vaginal itch and swelling.

Trich is gotten from having unprotected sex with multiple sexual partners. GENITAL WARTS Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus(HPV) HPV the most common sexually transmitted infection. Symptoms include; - Flesh colored growths that look like cauliflower

- Mild bleeding and discomfort. The strains of HPV that cause genital warts are 6 and 11. They’re gotten through intercourse, genital touching, giving or receiving oral sex. So, next time you feel something, make sure you refer back to this thread for clarity.
