Because we still live in a world in which people are forced to pay for their freedom, over the next year I’m going to be donating to bail funds in all the states where I worked on my book to commemorate its release. The call was abolition then. The call is abolition now.
Like enslaved people & abolitionists in the past, today activists are faced with ?s about how to reduce harm & protect people in the immediate & near future, while working to dismantle the systems which oppress them. One answer is to help them escape through the system’s confines
If you’re interested in my book, I hope you will join me in learning more about pre-trial detention, cash bail, incarceration, and prison abolition in the US. @NationalBailOut is a great place to start.
If you don’t want to wait for my book to learn more about historical iterations of buying freedom and in slavery’s afterlife, you can read this 2020 essay I wrote for @BlkPerspectives
You can buy my book through @PennPress for 30% off with the code PENN-BERNIER30. If you’ve got the means, please take that 30% you saved and give it to your local bail fund!
@NationalBailOut has this directory of Black led organizations.
@bailfundnetwork has another resource for bail funds by state.
I’ll share more as I go. If you know any orgs or organizers who might like a free copy of my book, please let me know! As always, thank you! Until everyone is free and all empires fall from the US to Palestine…❤️
