I am a teetotaler. I am not saying it's a great achievement, but in case anyone is interested here's how I/ my parents instituted a zero tolerance policy for alcohol: - alcohol is haram in my home : for us alcohol is not a health issue, it's a moral issue. - identity engineering: our family doesn't drink. Conversely if one who drinks can't be our family. What others do is irrelevant to us. - no alcohol apologia is allowed in home. No ifs or buts. No arguments. No moral/ethical flexibility. No cultural Marxism. Does such a rigid stance isolate us from most people ? Yes. Will people think you are an oddball and not cool ? Yes Is it worth it ? Yes , IMO - but everyone has to decide for themselves. Besides the same strategy may not work for everyone, just because it worked for us. The best part of the family level control is that it's within our power to do it. What the government does with alcohol becomes immaterial.
