A viral clip of Donald Trump Jr saying on his Triggered podcast that "the US should've been sending weapons to Russia" instead of Ukraine is AI-generated and fake. Worryingly, the fake AI audio sounds near identical to Don Jr's real voice. Let's see how we can verify it's fake.

The clip is supposed to have been taken from an episode of Don Jr's Triggered podcast from 25 February called "FBI Dream Team". Notably, the episode is currently not available on the podcast's Spotify page or an archived version of it. That's the first red flag.

On Don Jr's X there's a Rumble episode of his Triggered podcast from 24 February, called "FBI Dream Team". I couldn't find the exchange in the AI clip anywhere in the Rumble episode. Also, there's a second voice in the AI clip talking to Don Jr, which is absent in the episode.

Halfway through the episode, Don Jr briefly talks about the aid given to Ukraine and Zelensky. But the exchange in the AI clip never comes up. Also, Don Jr never takes any calls or has any exchnage with another person throughout the episode, as we hear in the AI clip.

I contacted @_esaliba from Professor Hany Farid's GetReal Labs team to see what their analysis of the clip is. They told that me their trained models have recognised the Don Jr audio clip as AI-generated.

Add to that all of that the fact that Trump's adviser Andrew Surabian has already said on X that the audio is fake and AI-generated. Don Jr's podcast producer Drew Lynch also told @Mediaite that "this audio is absolutely, 100% fake."

To conclude, the Don Jr clip is definitely fake. But worryingly, it's one of the best AI audio clips I've ever heard. It's almost unrecognisable from Don Jr's real voice. Gen AI is rapidly imrpvoing, and the online information space is going to become even more confusing.
