During the Armenian Genocide, hundreds of thousands of Armenian children were orphaned. Starting in 1915 a humanitarian movement began to provide aid and assistance to Armenians and Armenian children fleeing genocide committed by Turks. ⬇️
Armenian orphans were collected from the streets of the city and, after providing appropriate care and medical assistance, were provided with shelter in orphanages. Even US President Woodrow Wilson called for participation in the organized fundraisers, ⬇️
encouraging humanitarian activities. As a result, between 1915-1930 more than $117 million was donated.
The photograph was taken in the 1920s at a “Near East Relief” all girl’s orphanage. Around 2,000 children lined up to send a thank you message to America. ⬇️
Other photographs were also taken where the children sent “Merry Christmas” greetings as well. Later, the photographs were turned into postcards and sent all over the Americas. ⬆️
